DIY Packing

Master Moving Schedule:

Stress Free, Calm, Organized, Easier to Unpack.

6 weeks out

Contact your broker or landlord to check sizes of doors and stairs to make sure your larger items will fit.

Study and vet moving companies, compare at least 3. You don’t need a moving date to secure the company you want. Get a a written contract. Do something really crazy and read it. Ask questions. Make sure it’s fair and clear. No surprises.

5 weeks out

Order small boxes for books, bath, small kitchen items, also order quality moving tape - 8 rolls, large trash bags for purge, trash, donations, recycling during the packing process. Have a good marker on hand for the boxes.

Note on all the boxes the room they are going to. Number them and make a separate list of contents. Example; Office 1, Kitchen 3, Bedroom 2.

Note the contents separately. This keeps it clear and easy for the moving people.

5 weeks out

Arrange to sell or donate large items including furniture, rugs, appliances, plants, decorations...anything that needs to be arranged. Make sure you set dates so that you have what you need till the end.

4 weeks out

Pack books, mark well, categorized and organized for an organized, categorized unpack. Set up empty boxes first to make it easy to categorize, and to rearrange the pack to accommodate the different size and shapes of the books. It’s a puzzle. Make sure the bottoms of the boxes are well taped.

3 weeks out

Decide most efficient use of any luggage you have to use for the move. Calculate this first before ordering medium and large boxes.

Order mostly medium and a few large boxes, and packing paper-10 lbs. You should still have plenty of tape.

3 weeks out

Pack all non essentials; decorations, unnecessary clothes & shoes, most of the kitchen, excess towels and linens, etc. This will be the bulk of the packing.

Leave available everything you’ll need for the 2 weeks or so before you move and just after the move. Clearly mark boxes. Leave all these boxes open till the end.

2 weeks out

Check in with moving company, secure moving date, notify post office, bank, utilities, insurance, credit cards, friends, any other.

1 week out

Assemble a box to leave out for each room for “last in, first out”. And set a weekend bag for your clothing and bath items, “last in, first out”.

Couple of days before the move

Pack whatever you won’t need in the last few days, and first few days in your new place!

Day before the move

Pack your weekend bag and last boxes for kitchen and bathroom, with your toiletries, other essentials needed for 3 days.

Tape closed all the moving boxes except “last in, first out”, & final “weekend” luggage.

Morning of the move

Close up remaining boxes and overnight bag.

You’re ready to move!! Stress free, on time, organized.
